The drive down the GC-1
The route is motorway almost all the way. From the airport the GC-1 runs south along the east coast past Arinaga, Vecindario and the wind turbines on the plains, then past San Agustín before you leave at one of the Playa del Inglés exits.
The last few minutes are on resort streets. These can be slow in the evening, when traffic builds around the shopping centres and nightlife areas, but the total stays close to the typical drive time.
What kind of place is Playa del Inglés?
Playa del Inglés grew up as one of the first package-holiday resorts on the island. It is a mix of high-rise hotels, apartment blocks and large bungalow complexes, laid out on a slope that runs down to a long sandy beach and the edge of the Maspalomas dunes.
The resort is known for its busy nightlife and as one of Europe's best-known LGBTQ+-friendly holiday destinations, with the Yumbo Centre at the heart of the scene. Further back from the beach, many bungalow complexes are quieter and popular with couples and long-stay winter guests.
Practical tips for your arrival
- Bungalow complexes
- Some complexes have a reception at one entrance and units spread across a large site. Tell the driver your complex name and, if you know it, the reception location.
- Late arrivals
- Many flights from northern Europe land in the evening. Check whether your reception is staffed late or if a key box is used, and keep your accommodation's phone number handy.
- Events and festivals
- During Carnival and the Pride week in spring, the resort fills up and some streets near the centres can be closed. Allow a little extra time on those days.
Frequently asked questions
How long is the drive from Gran Canaria Airport to Playa del Inglés?
The 30 km drive typically takes 22–28 minutes. It runs almost entirely on the GC-1 motorway, with a short final stretch through the resort.
What does a private transfer to Playa del Inglés cost?
Usually around €40–55 for a car with up to three passengers and around €55–75 for a minivan for up to about seven. The exact price is shown before you book.
Can the driver take me to my bungalow rather than the main road?
The driver goes to the entrance or reception of your complex wherever vehicles can reach. Inside large complexes, paths between units are often for pedestrians only, so the last few metres may be on foot.

Yes, it is the liveliest resort in the south, with bars and clubs around its shopping centres. If you prefer quiet evenings, ask your accommodation where in the resort it is located.
Is Playa del Inglés close to Maspalomas?
Yes. The dunes start at the southern end of the beach, and Maspalomas begins on the far side. Many visitors walk across the dunes or along the beach between the two.
