Christmas in Lapland 2026: Rovaniemi, Santa Claus Village, Ski Resorts

When to visit Lapland for Christmas 2026, how Rovaniemi compares with Levi, Ylläs, Pyhä and Saariselkä, and what to book early before the busy December weeks.

When the Christmas season starts in Lapland

The Christmas season in Finnish Lapland runs from late November to early January, and Rovaniemi on the Arctic Circle is its centre. In 2026 Santa Claus Village holds its traditional Countdown to Christmas opening ceremony on Saturday 7 November in the evening, and the separate SantaPark theme park is open for winter from 31 October 2026 to 23 January 2027.

Santa Claus Village itself is open all year and has no entrance fee, but the busiest weeks are from late November until the first days of January. During this period the individual shops, restaurants and Santa Claus Office usually extend their opening hours. Each business sets its own times, so check the village’s official information shortly before your trip.

Late November, December or early January?

Late November is calmer and usually better value. Snow cover is common but not guaranteed, and days are already short. It suits couples and families who want to meet Santa without long queues.

December up to Christmas is the classic period: snow is more reliable, the village is fully decorated and almost every activity runs, from husky and reindeer rides to snowmobile tours. This is also when accommodation, activities and flights sell out first.

Christmas to early January combines the festive atmosphere with New Year. Expect the highest demand and prices of the season.

Daylight is limited everywhere in Lapland in December, with only a few hours of bright twilight around midday, and further north the sun does not rise at all for several weeks. Temperatures are often well below freezing, typically between around −5 °C and −20 °C, and colder spells are possible.

Where to stay: Rovaniemi or a ski resort?

Rovaniemi and Santa Claus Village
Best for a short Christmas trip and first-time visitors. Rovaniemi Airport (RVN) is right next to Santa Claus Village, so the transfer to the village or the town centre takes only about 15 minutes. Glass igloos, cabins and city hotels are all close by.
Levi
A lively ski resort with a compact village centre, restaurants and après-ski. From Rovaniemi Airport it is about 2 hours 15 minutes by road. Good for families who want skiing plus Christmas activities.
Ylläs
Quieter, spread over two villages, Äkäslompolo and Ylläsjärvi, with long cross-country trails. Around 2 hours 15 minutes from Rovaniemi Airport. Suits travellers who want space and nature.
Pyhä
The closest of the fell resorts at roughly 1 hour 45 minutes from Rovaniemi Airport. Small and calm, with national park scenery and slopes for all levels.
Saariselkä
Far north in Inari region, about 3 hours from Rovaniemi Airport. A good base for northern lights and the polar night atmosphere, with log cabins and wilderness activities.

Getting from Rovaniemi Airport to your accommodation

Most Christmas visitors land at Rovaniemi Airport. The short hop to Santa Claus Village or the town centre takes about 15 minutes, which makes even a late-evening arrival easy. The longer trips to the fell resorts follow winter roads through forest and open fell landscape, often in darkness, so allow for slower driving in snow and ice.

A private transfer is practical when you travel with children, skis, a pram or a lot of winter luggage, or when you land late and do not want to wait for a scheduled coach. With HotelTaxi you book the whole vehicle, the price is agreed before you travel and the driver meets you in the arrivals area with a name sign. Declare skis or snowboards when booking so the right vehicle is sent, and request child seats in advance.
