Juan Santamaría International Airport transfer

This page covers private transfers from Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) to the city, the volcano and cloud-forest regions and both coasts of Costa Rica. A local transfer company meets you in arrivals and drives you straight to your hotel, with no shared shuttle and no stops for other passengers.

The airport sits in Alajuela, on the western edge of the Central Valley, so almost every journey starts on the busy highways around San José before it climbs into the mountains or drops towards the Pacific or the Caribbean.

Transfers from this airport

Arriving at SJO

Most long-haul flights from North America and Europe land at SJO in the afternoon or evening. After immigration and customs you walk out into the arrivals area, where your driver waits with a name sign. The exact meeting point is confirmed by the local provider by phone or WhatsApp, so keep your phone on after landing and share your flight number when you book.

Because the driver follows the flight, a delayed arrival does not change the agreed price. The car is reserved only for your party.

Where travellers go from San José airport

Central Valley
San José city centre is only 18 km away, but rush-hour traffic often stretches the ride to 68–85 minutes. Many travellers spend their first night in the city before heading out.
Volcanoes and cloud forest
La Fortuna at the foot of Arenal, the Monteverde cloud forest, the turquoise river at Río Celeste near Bijagua and the rainforest lodges of Sarapiquí. These are mountain drives of roughly three to five hours.
Central Pacific
Puntarenas and Jacó are the closest coastal destinations, around two to two and a half hours away. Manuel Antonio near Quepos and Uvita further south take closer to four or five hours.
Nicoya Peninsula and Caribbean
Santa Teresa involves either the ferry across the Gulf of Nicoya or a long drive around it. Puerto Viejo de Talamanca lies on the Caribbean coast south of Limón, reached through Braulio Carrillo National Park.

How long do transfers from SJO take?

Distances in Costa Rica look short on a map, but the roads are mostly two-lane, winding and shared with trucks. As a rough guide, the city takes about an hour, Puntarenas and Jacó about two to two and a half hours, Sarapiquí around three, Monteverde, Manuel Antonio and La Fortuna three and a half to four and a half hours, Uvita and Río Celeste four to five hours, and Puerto Viejo or Santa Teresa five to six hours or more.

If you land late in the evening, think about whether you want a five-hour drive on mountain roads in the dark. Many travellers bound for the far coasts sleep near the airport or in San José and leave the next morning.

Choosing a vehicle

Car for 1–3 passengers
Suits couples and small families with normal suitcases. Ask for a larger vehicle if you have more than one big case per person.
Minivan for up to about 7
The usual choice for families and groups, and for anyone with surfboards, diving gear or a lot of luggage for a long stay.
Child seats and equipment
Child seats can be requested when booking. Declare surfboards, bicycles and similar gear in advance so a suitable vehicle is sent.

Seasons in Costa Rica

The dry season runs roughly from December to April and is the busiest time on the Pacific side, especially around Christmas, New Year and Easter. The green season from May to November brings afternoon rain to most of the country. Mornings are often clear, but heavy showers slow traffic on the mountain roads and can occasionally cause landslides.

The Caribbean coast follows its own pattern and is often drier in September and October, when the Pacific is at its wettest. Whatever the season, allow some extra time on any route that crosses the mountains.

Frequently asked questions

Is Juan Santamaría Airport in San José?

It is in Alajuela, about 18 km by road from central San José. The airport code SJO and its name refer to the capital because it is the country's main international gateway.

How do I find my driver at SJO?

The driver waits in the arrivals area with a name sign. The local provider confirms the exact meeting point with you by phone or WhatsApp before or on arrival.

What happens if my flight is late?

Share your flight number when booking so the driver can follow your arrival. The price agreed at booking does not change because of a delay or traffic.

Can I stop on the way, for example at the Tárcoles bridge or for lunch?

Short stops on long routes are common, but mention them when you book so the provider can plan the timing. The ride is private, so the stops are only the ones you ask for.

Should I fly into SJO or Liberia?

SJO is closer to the Central Valley, the Central and South Pacific and the Caribbean coast. For the northern Guanacaste beaches the Liberia airport is usually closer.
