Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport transfer

This page explains how private transfers work from Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU), the main international airport of Mauritius, to hotels and resorts on every coast of the island. A local transfer company meets you in arrivals and drives you straight to your hotel, with no shared shuttle and no stops on the way.

The airport sits in the south-east of the island at Plaisance, near Mahébourg. That location shapes every journey: the south and east coasts are relatively close, while the north and west take longer than many first-time visitors expect.

Transfers from this airport

Arriving at Mauritius Airport

Most visitors from Europe arrive on an overnight long-haul flight that lands in the morning. After immigration, baggage reclaim and customs, your driver waits for you at the meeting point in the arrivals area with a name sign.

The local provider confirms the exact meeting details with you by phone or WhatsApp before or on arrival. Share your flight number when you book so the provider can follow the landing time. The agreed price does not change because of a delay.

Mauritius drives on the left, and roads off the motorway are often narrow and run through villages, which is one reason many visitors prefer not to drive after a night flight.

Where travellers go from MRU

Grand Baie and Trou aux Biches (north)
The liveliest part of the island, with restaurants, boat trips and calm lagoon beaches. Around 63–70 km and about 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes via the motorway past Port Louis.
Belle Mare (east)
A long white-sand beach with large resorts and golf courses. About 49 km and 59–74 minutes through the east of the island.
Flic en Flac (west)
A long beach facing the sunset, with resorts, apartments and a small town. About 46 km and usually 42–53 minutes.
Le Morne (south-west)
Resorts below Le Morne Brabant, a UNESCO World Heritage mountain, and a lagoon well known for kitesurfing. About 54 km, but 67–84 minutes on the slower coast road.
Bel Ombre (south)
A quiet stretch of the south coast with a few resorts, a golf course and nature reserves inland. The closest at 39 km and 49–62 minutes.

How long are transfers from Mauritius Airport?

Distances look short on the map, but average speeds are low once you leave the motorway. On the routes above, expect between about 45 minutes and 1 hour 25 minutes. The north and west are reached mainly on the M1 and M2 motorways, while the east coast, the south coast and Le Morne involve more village roads and bends.

Weekday rush hours around Port Louis can add time, especially on transfers to the north.

Choosing the right vehicle

A standard private car suits one to three passengers with normal luggage. Couples on honeymoon often have more luggage than they expect, so mention any extra bags when booking. Families and groups of up to about seven people usually need a minivan, and larger vehicles can be requested.

Child seats can be requested when you book. Golf bags, kitesurf and windsurf equipment, surfboards and diving gear must be declared in advance so the provider sends a vehicle with enough space.

Getting back to the airport

Work backwards from your flight time. Check your airline’s recommendation; for long-haul flights it is common to be at the airport around three hours before departure.

As a rule of thumb, guests in Bel Ombre and Flic en Flac leave their hotel about 4 hours before departure, guests in Belle Mare, Grand Baie and Trou aux Biches about 4 hours 15 minutes before, and guests in Le Morne about 4 hours 30 minutes before. You can book the return ride together with your arrival transfer.

Frequently asked questions

Where is Mauritius Airport located?

Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport is in the south-east of Mauritius, at Plaisance near Mahébourg. The east and south coasts are relatively close, while the north and west of the island need a longer drive.

How do I find my driver at MRU?

Your driver waits at the meeting point in the arrivals area with a name sign. The local provider confirms the details with you by phone or WhatsApp, so keep your phone switched on after landing.

What happens if my flight to Mauritius is delayed?

Add your flight number when booking so the provider can follow your arrival time. The agreed price does not change because of a delayed flight or traffic.

Is the transfer shared with other passengers?

No. Every transfer is private: only you and your party travel in the vehicle, and it goes directly to your hotel without stops at other resorts.

Can I bring kitesurf or golf equipment?

Yes, but declare it when you book. Kite bags, boards and golf bags take up a lot of space, and the provider needs to know in advance to send a suitable vehicle.
