Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen International Airport transfer
This page explains private transfers from Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) to hotels on the European side of the city, above all the Old City around Sultanahmet and the Taksim and Beyoğlu districts. Both trips cross the Bosphorus and usually take between 70 and 90 minutes.

Transfers from this airport
Where is Sabiha Gökçen Airport?
SAW lies in Pendik on the Asian side of Istanbul, in the far south-east of the metropolitan area. It is the city's second airport and is used heavily by low-cost and holiday carriers, so many visitors from Germany, Russia, the UK and the Middle East land here rather than at Istanbul Airport.
The catch is geography. Most first-time visitors stay on the European side, in the historic peninsula or around Taksim, and both lie more than 50 km away by road. Every transfer from SAW into those areas has to cross the Bosphorus, which is the single biggest factor in how long the ride takes.
How do you cross from the Asian to the European side?
From the airport, motorways run west along the Asian shore towards Kadıköy and Üsküdar. To reach Europe a car uses either one of the suspension bridges over the Bosphorus or the Eurasia Tunnel, a road tunnel under the strait that comes out near the Sea of Marmara shore close to the Old City. All of these crossings are tolled and the tolls are collected electronically, so you do not stop at a booth.
Which crossing makes sense depends on where you are staying and on traffic at that moment. Drivers who work this airport every day watch live traffic and choose the faster option on the day.
Typical drive times from SAW to the European side
- Sultanahmet (Old City)
- 54 km, usually 71–89 minutes. Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapı Palace and the Grand Bazaar, with many small boutique hotels on narrow lanes.
- Taksim & Beyoğlu
- 64 km, usually 71–89 minutes. Taksim Square, İstiklal Avenue, Galata and Cihangir, with large city hotels and plenty of apartments.
Rush hours and what they mean for your transfer
Istanbul traffic follows a clear rhythm. On weekdays the morning and evening commuter peaks put heavy pressure on the bridges and the approach motorways, and Friday evenings and the days before public holidays are often the slowest of the week. Late at night and early on weekend mornings the same trip can be noticeably quicker.
The drive times on this page are typical figures, not guarantees. If you land in the late afternoon on a weekday, expect the upper end of the range or a little more. The price you agree when booking stays the same either way, even if traffic is slow or your flight is delayed.
Meeting your driver at arrivals
Add your flight number when you book. The local provider tracks the landing time and agrees the exact meeting point with you by phone or WhatsApp. The driver then waits in the arrivals area holding a sign with your name.
Passport control at SAW can be slow when several international flights land together. There is no need to hurry: the pickup follows your real arrival rather than the scheduled time.
Choosing the right vehicle
A standard private car suits one to three travellers with normal suitcases. Families, groups of four to seven, or anyone with bulky luggage should book a minivan, and larger vehicles are available on request. Child seats can be requested during booking.
The ride is fully private, with no shared shuttle and no stops at other hotels, which matters on a long cross-city trip after a flight.
Frequently asked questions
Is Sabiha Gökçen Airport in Europe or Asia?
SAW is on the Asian side of Istanbul, in the Pendik district. The Old City and Taksim are on the European side, so the transfer always crosses the Bosphorus by bridge or tunnel.
How long does it take from SAW to the city centre?
To Sultanahmet or Taksim the drive usually takes 71–89 minutes. At weekday rush hours or before holidays it can take longer, while late-night arrivals are often quicker.
Are bridge or tunnel tolls an extra charge?
The price shown before booking is the total you pay for the ride. It does not change because of the route the driver takes, traffic or a flight delay.
Should I stay on the Asian side if I land at SAW?
Districts such as Kadıköy are closer to the airport, but most sights are on the European side. If your plans centre on the Old City or Beyoğlu, staying there usually saves more time over the whole trip than a shorter airport ride.
Can I book a minivan for a family or group?
Yes. Minivans for up to about seven passengers can be booked for both routes, and larger vehicles can be requested. Mention child seats and any bulky luggage when you book.
