ABOUT CATANIA
Catania is Sicily’s second largest city, with a population of around 300,000. It lies on the Ionian Sea, under the shadow of Mount Etna.
Visiting Catania is quite easy, as the old town centre is relatively small. An ideal starting point would be the main square, Piazza Duomo. It is a major meeting point for locals, tourists and the city's principle streets, which converge at the Piazza. East of the square stands the magnificent Norman Cathedral, dedicated to the Patron Saint and protector of the city, St. Agatha. In the centre stands the city’s symbol, a lava elephant fountain carrying an obelisk. The Collegiata or Regia Chapel is another magnificent example of the architectonic splendor that came about during the century of reconstruction.
Remaining sights to see in Catania include the black-and-white Porta Garibaldi and the striking uncompleted facade of the Chiesa di San Nicolo in Piazza Dante.
Catania has a Mediterranean Climate with cool winters, and hot and muggy summers. March to October is a perfect time to visit this beautiful city.
